Peninsula Cycling Options

The moderate option for Lake Road improvement, selected by public in the most recent AT consultation, is a sensible direction. If the bike lanes are to stay on Lake Road, they should be continuous and separated as a matter of high priority. Some of our local schools, Belmont Primary in particular, have the highest proportion of cycle to school students in the country, they and their student's use of cycling infrastructure needs to be supported. Lake Road should be able to be used by cyclists of moderate ability.
This is not to say Lake Road can be the only silver-bullet for the peninsula's transport issues. The western green route should continue to be developed, but care should be taken to avoid harm to natural areas. It should be noted here that commuting cyclists and walkers are not a desireable mix.
The eastern green routes for recreation and local commuting should also continue to be investigated.
We're also keen that other dedicated cycling options continue to be investigated as part of a wider peninsula transport and recreation network.
We look forward to the detailed business case for Lake Road which AT is producing now and that will be due for public consultation shortly after the elections. We look forward to the considered and informed public discussion of the issues this raises.
